The Reykjavík Christmas Cat, or Jólakötturinn, is a towering figure
from Icelandic folklore said to roam the city during the Christmas
season, devouring those who failed to receive new clothes before the
holiday, a grim but playful reminder of an old tradition where
finishing autumn work, especially wool processing, was rewarded with
new garments, and today the cat has become a festive icon in
Reykjavík, appearing as a glowing statue each winter and living on in
poems, songs, and jokes as a darkly humorous symbol of Iceland’s
holiday spirit
