The Lloyd’s Building is one of the most distinctive modern structures in the City of London. Located at 1 Lime Street, it serves as the headquarters of the insurance market Lloyd’s of London. Completed in 1986 and designed by the British architect Richard Rogers, the building is widely regarded as a masterpiece of high-tech architecture, a style that celebrates engineering and structural elements as visible design features.
What makes the Lloyd’s Building remarkable is its “inside-out” design. Instead of hiding service elements such as elevators, pipes, ducts, and staircases within the walls, these components were placed on the exterior of the building. This approach created a futuristic appearance while freeing the interior to contain large, flexible spaces. At the heart of the structure is the Underwriting Room, a vast central hall where brokers and underwriters traditionally meet to negotiate insurance deals.
