The National Railway Museum in York is one of the world’s largest museums devoted to rail transport, located just a short walk from York railway station. With free entry, it tells the story of over 300 years of railway history, unfolding across vast exhibition halls filled with everything from early steam engines to sleek modern trains.
Among its most famous exhibits are engineering icons such as Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive, and Stephenson’s Rocket from 1829, one of the earliest successful steam engines. The royal carriages from monarchs past and
even a full-size Japanese bullet train, offering a striking contrast between the earliest innovations and cutting-edge rail technology. The museum’s Great Hall and Station Hall present these trains in station-like atmospheres.
