Friedrichstraße is a historic and central north–south boulevard in Berlin, running about 3.5 km from Oranienburger Tor to Mehringplatz and known for its mix of shopping, culture, and Cold War history. Once a lively entertainment district filled with theaters and cafés, it later became a symbol of the city’s division, home to the famous Checkpoint Charlie and the Tränenpalast border checkpoint at Friedrichstraße Station. Since reunification, the area has been extensively redeveloped with high-end shops, modern architecture, and major cultural venues like the Friedrichstadt-Palast and Berliner Ensemble. Today it remains a popular destination for visitors and locals, and Berlin continues to debate future plans to make parts of the street more pedestrian-friendly.
