The Bullring in Birmingham is a major city-centre shopping complex adjacent to Birmingham New Street station, formed by the Bullring and Grand Central developments. It contains more than 200 shops and eateries across multiple levels, combining flagship department stores, high‑street brands and a wide choice of food outlets. The Selfridges building, with its distinctive aluminium-disc façade, and the large bronze Bull sculpture outside are its most recognisable landmarks.
The site has a long history as a market and meeting place: the name “Bull Ring” dates back to medieval times when livestock markets and fairs were held there. Over centuries the area evolved into Birmingham’s principal market quarter. In the 1960s a concrete shopping centre was built on the site (the Bull Ring Centre opened in 1964), which by the 1990s was considered dated and was largely demolished during a major redevelopment.
The modern Bullring opened after that redevelopment in 2003, with the striking Selfridges building designed by Future Systems. The complex was further expanded in 2015 with the adjoining Grand Central development built above New Street station, strengthening the site’s role as both a retail destination and transport hub. Today the Bullring remains one of the UK’s busiest shopping centres, well connected by rail, bus and car and especially busy at weekends and during evenings.
