The last time I walked down Belfast’s Falls Road, I encountered a world of chaos. Rows of houses burned from rioting and violence, lined the streets. Ever-present RUC vans drove constant circuits, and a deep-seated hostility hung over the streets and people of this battleground of the Troubles in Belfast.
More than three decades later, an uneasy peace has descended on the Falls and Shankill Roads. The green “peace wall,” locked every night, still carves its way through the streets, keeping communities separated. The memorials of both sides present their truths, marked by flowers flags and too many names.
Belfast has found an easy peace but still shows the pain and memory of the horrors of the not too distant past.
