Fjordenhaus – Vejle – Denmark

Fjordenhus is a landmark building located directly in Vejle Fjord, Denmark, designed by Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson in collaboration with architect Sebastian Behmann of Studio Other Spaces.
Completed in 2018, it serves as the headquarters of KIRK KAPITAL, while also functioning as a large-scale public artwork.

The building is composed of four intersecting cylindrical volumes rising 28 meters from the water. Large elliptical voids are carved through the cylinders, creating dramatic openings that frame views of the fjord and city while allowing light, wind, and reflections to move through the structure. Because of these openings, the building appears different from every angle and changes constantly with weather and tides

Fjordenhus is constructed from approximately 970,000 specially made bricks, many glazed in subtle greens, blues, and earthy tones. The brickwork is highly complex, with curved walls and patterned bonds that required custom engineering and craftsmanship. The structure rests on a concrete foundation anchored to the seabed, allowing it to
stand independently in the water rather than on land.

The ground floor is open to the public, forming a vaulted,
cathedral-like space where columns, arches, and water reflections create a calm, immersive atmosphere. Above this, the upper floors house offices and meeting rooms. The interiors feature integrated artworks by Eliasson, including sculptural staircases, custom lighting, and stone mosaic floors, blending art and architecture into a single experience.
